Trans-Sumatra Tollway and Railway Constructions to Start Next Year, Says President Joko Widodo

Trans-Sumatra Tollway and Railway Constructions to Start Next Year, Says President Joko Widodo : President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has said that construction of the Trans-Sumatra tollway and railway be started in 2015. The infrastructure project is aimed to catalyze the integration and improvisation of connectivity in Sumatra, the sixth largest island in the world.

“We will start the Trans-Sumatra tollway and Trans-Sumatra railway next year,” the President said in Bakauheni, Lampung, as quoted by Kompas.com (25 Nov 2014).

The President wants a development plan in relation to the long-term connectivity and integration between regions.

“We want to see how the development is in the next 50 years, in the next 100 years,” said President Jokowi.

Previously, State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Rini M Soemarno has asked all the state enterprises that are involved in the Trans-Sumatra tollway development to strengthen coordination so as to stay parallel with the infrastructure development acceleration program.

In February 2012, the BUMN Ministry has planned the development of the 2,700 km Trans-Sumatra toll way that connects Aceh and Lampung, with an investment worth 300 trillion rupiah.

The ministry has recorded that such development is economically challenging, hence there was an agreement to build a consortium consisted of Jasa Marga and regional governments in Sumatra.

The tollway is consisted of four main corridors, in addition to three priority corridors as part of the Sumatra road network.

The four main corridors are consisted of the sections connecting Lampung-Palembang (358 km), Palembang-Pekanbaru (610 km), Pekanbaru-Medan (548 km), and Medan-Banda Aceh (460 km).

Meanwhile, the three additional priority corridors are those connecting Palembang-Bengkulu (303 km), Pekanbaru-Padang (242 km) and Medan-Sibolga (175 km).
