Tehran – Mashhad Electrification Contract Signed with Chinese Companies :Iran has signed a contract for installing and maintaining electrification equipment for the Tehran – Masshad Line and to procure 70 electric Locomotives. The contract for the 926 km line was signed with a consortium that included Chinese companies CMC and SU Power and subsidiaries of local industrial group MAPNA.

National Railway of Iran (RAI) signed the engineering, procurement, construction and finance contract on 29th June 2014. Work to upgrade the line was officially launched with a ceremony in February 2012.

With this project the existing infrastructure will be upgraded to a high speed train line. The maximum speed will be increased to 200 kph with a capability to increase up to 250 kph in the future. The travel time is estimated to be reduced from 12 hours to 6 hours.

The construction period in the project is 42 months and then will have 5 year maintenance period. The project is financed by China and Iranian Government will contribute 15%.

On the other hand, MAPNA is delivering the locomotives based on a technology transfer agreement with Siemens, signed in 2008. Half of 150 IranRunner Diesel Locomotives are already delivered.
