Salvador metro starts trial run :Just two days before the city is due to host its first fixture in the 2014 football World Cup, the city of Salvador commences trial run on the first phase of the metro on June 11

President Dilma Rousseff inaugurated the trial run in the 7.6 km section of Line 1. The section between Lapa and Retiro will have 5 stations open and will operate between 12:00 to 16:00 Monday to Friday at 10 minute headways. Trial run will continue until mid-September gradually increasing the period of services.

On World Cup match days services will run for 5 h before kick-off until 3 h after the end of the match, and will be restricted to match ticket holders.

The construction of the metro had started in 2000, but was halted for a period. It restarted in 2013. The remaining 4.3 km section between Retiro and Piraja is planned to be opened in January 2015. The second phase of about 24 km is known as Line 2 is planned to be completed in spring 2017 and will be extended up to the Salvador International Airport. Line 1 is also planned to be extended by 5.6 km up to Acesso Norte.

The fleet consists of Mitsui-Hyundai Rotem train sets which were delivered in 2008. Currently six four car train sets are in service. 49 additional train sets are to be delivered by Rotem and Iesa, for which the order was placed this year.
