Rail Projects in Oman :Connecting Oman to the rest of the GCC Region to Promote Economic and Social Benefits
There are an estimated 1.3 trillion barrels of proven oil reserve left in the world’s major fields, which at present rates of consumption will be sufficient to last 40 years. By 2040, production levels may be down to 15 million barrels per day – around 20% of what we currently consume. It is likely by then that the world’s population will be twice as large, and more of it industrialized (and therefore oil dependent) hence the GCC countries are looking at alternate sources or revenue.

The Sultanate of Oman is looking at being the logistical hub for entire GCC Region and want the rail network to be one of the key GDP players. The entire GCC is looking at a 44,000 KM rail network with investments in excess of $ 250 billion connecting all the GCC countries with major ongoing and upcoming project plans. The Ministry of Transport and Communication of the Sultanate of Oman has already announced and started work on the first phase of a 2244 KM rail network with 1197KM port network with investments in excess of $ 15 billion.

These upcoming rail projects will open up a lot of employment opportunities across the Sultanate of Oman and the government is looking at educating the locals to operate this rail network. The government is also looking at implementing subjects related to rail operations in the education syllabus and also a number short term courses.

The country hopes to have its rail network operating by around 2018, with the design stage expected to be completed early next year and construction of the first stage due to begin by the third quarter of 2014. The government is keen to minimize delays, aware that further hiccups could impact what is a tight timetable. It will also be keeping a close eye on the Gulf-wide rail network’s progress, which the GCC hopes will be fully operational by the end of the decade.
