Oman floats construction tender for rail projects :Oman Railways Company has floated the first tender for contractors to be part of building the country’s new railway.

The company is inviting firms to pre-qualify to build infrastructure and IT systems for the first part of the line, which will run from Al Buraimi to the port of Sohar, according to the official Oman News Agency. The estimated cost of this phase is around OR1bn ($2.6bn).

Only companies who make this pre-qualification list will be considered for future stages of the project linking via Muscat to Duq’m and Salalah ports.

The Railways Company said that its pre-qualification process will complete in August 2014, which will coincide with the finalising of designs for the first phase. This will then allow it to float the execution tenders to build the infrastructure and IT systems. Firms who make the pre-qualification list will be on it for four years.
