Netherlands will supply electricity for their trains from wind turbines

Netherlands will supply electricity for their trains from wind turbines :Netherlands entered an energy contract to supply all the traction power for Dutch Railways from wind turbines.

On May 15th energy contract is signed between Eneco and Vivens to supply all the traction power for Dutch Railways from wind turbines, starting in 2018. The partners of the joint venture Vivens are Netherlands Railways (NS), Veolia, Arriva, Connexxion and railfreight operators

With this contract, that covers a period of 10 years from 2015 to 2025, 100% of the traction power on the ProRail 1.5 kV dc electrified network will be provided from wind turbines. Currently around 50% of the traction power is supplied from wind power.

The total consumption of electricity on the Dutch rail network is about 1.4 terawatt hours (TWh) per year. The use of wind power is a part of a policy in Netherlands considering energy consumption in trains. Netherlands is also trying to renew their fleet with modern trains that use less traction energy. With the new trains and adopted new driving techniques, NS claims that consumption of electricity per passenger kilometer has been reduced by about 30% since 2005.
