JR Hokkaido unveils new Shinkansen bullet train colors

JR Hokkaido unveils new Shinkansen bullet train colors :Hokkaido Railway Co. (JR Hokkaido) on April 16 unveiled the lavender-themed livery for the Shinkansen bullet trains set to begin running between Tokyo and Hakodate in 2016.

The railway also stated that it was shooting for a 4-hour, 10-minute travel time between JR Tokyo and the tentatively named JR Shin-Hakodate stations at the earliest. A 10-car E5 bullet train — the same model as the Hayabusa trains running on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori stations — in Hokkaido Shinkansen colors will be completed as early as this fall. The new train will be tested to make sure it has no problems with winter operations in Japan’s northernmost prefecture.

The new livery has a lavender stripe along its side to represent the flowers that grow in such abundance in Hokkaido, though the train will retain the Hayabusa’s bottle green top and white bottom to project unity with its Tohoku Shinkansen cousins.

The trains will have “Gran Class” first-class cars just as the Tohoku Shinkansen’s E5 trains. They will have a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour, but will travel at only 260 kilometers per hour between Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate stations, and 140 kilometers per hour through the Seikan Tunnel beneath the Tsugaru Straight separating Honshu and Hokkaido. Operating schedules have not yet been set.
