Japan Ready to Build High-Speed Railway for Jakarta-Surabaya :Minister of Transportation E.E. Mangindaan stated that Japan has officially stated its willingness to participate in the High-Speed trains project from Jakarta to Surabaya. High-Speed Railway is planned to be built elevated or hovering over an empty land that has freed the government to double track. This is expected to facilitate land acquisition which has been a constraint in infrastructure development.

Deputy Minister of Transportation, Bambang Susanto, said, Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is planning to provide a grant for the speed train development in Indonesia. “The grant is between Rp60-70 trillion” he said.

The JICA will conduct a three-year study to develop the high-speed railway system on Java Island. The agency is expected to sign a memorandum with the government at the latest on the following Thursday.

Currently, there are three speed railway routes: Jakarta- Surabaya through Cirebon and Semarang; Jakarta-Surabaya via Bandung, Cirebon and Semarang; and Jakarta-Surabaya through Cikarang, Bandung, Cirebon and Semarang. In 2011, the government announced their vision to create high-speed railway to connect Jakarta and Surabaya as means of stimulating the national economy. The Jakarta-Surabaya 685 kilometers fast train will connect both cities in 2 hours 53 minutes with maximum speed 300 kilometers/hour and average speed 250 kilometers/hours.
