İzmir Metro is now running up to Göztepe :Passerger service has now commenced up to the Göztepe station in İzmir, the third largest city located on west coast of Turkey. For a short period, the passenger will be using the Göztepe Station free of charge. With completion of this station, the metro line of İzmir has extended up to 16.5 kms. It is announced that on 30th of April, the trial run will start up to the last two stations, Poligon and Üçkuyular.

As announced earlier by the Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu, Göztepe Station was opened to metro service on the morning of 25th March. The İzmir Metro was first constructed as an 11.5 km line that runs between Üçyol and Bornova Stations. Then the Ege University, Evka 3, İzmirspor and Hatay stations were opened in 2012, extending the line up to 15.5 km. Today, with Göztepe Station in service, the trains are running over a line of 16.5 km. After completion of the trial run that shall start on 30th April up to the Poligon and Fahrettin Altay stations, these stations will also be opened, extending the line up to 20 km and increasing the station number up to 17.

One of the first passengers of the Göztepe Station was Mr. Sönmez Alev, General Director of İzmir Metro. Mr. Alev explained that “between 2001 and 2013 the ridership has increased by 118%. İzmir metro has carried about 66 million passengers in 2013, having a 22% increase when compared with the ridership of 2013. Now in 2014, with an average of about 250,000 passengers per day, the İzmir metro has a considerable share in İzmir’s public transit systems. Once the Fahrettin Altay station is put into service, it is estimated that the ridership shall be 320,000 people per day.

Integration of the 80 km long commuter system İZBAN with the metro line had a positive impact on both systems. Both the metro and İZBAN are carrying 500,000 people per day. Besides the Poligon and Altay Stations, which will be opened in a short period, once the İZBAN is extended up to Torbalı, the rail transit system will be serving to a greater number of people in the city of İzmir. In İzmir a total of 1,750,000 passengers are carried per day by various actors. 500,000 of these people, in other words 30% of all passengers are using rail systems.”

Mr. Alev indicated that after completion of test runs and assuring safety, they have started allowing passengers to board from the Göztepe Station, and as before the passengers using this station to board the metro will not be paying a fare for a period. He also stated that similar tests have started on the remaining two stations, Poligon and Üçkuyular and it is their objective to put these two stations into service in the shortest time possible. He also stated that “We have held a tender for procurement of 10 new vehicles. We plan to hold a new tender for procurement of 85 vehicles. With these tenders the fleet will have 95 new vehicles, which is more than 100% of the existing fleet, which have 77 vehicles. We have high expectancies for the ridership. Headway will again be 4 minutes. On the other hands, we started studies to upgrade the signaling system to a capacity that shall allow a headway of 2 minutes.”

Göztepe Station is a three story station built on an area of 10,500 square meters, making it one of the largest stations of İzmir Metro. Considering the geological structure of the ground some special engineering methods were used for construction of the stations. Station is build in a depth of 26 meters, resulting with 41,000 cubic meters of excavation. The station located under the residential area was built using 2000 tons of iron and 8760 meters of piles. Ballast was not used and rails were directly fixed on concrete.

As stated above, the Göztepe station is a three story building, with the platform level, concourse level and an intermediary level. The station has 18 escalators and 5 elevators serving passengers. Access from street level is provided with three entrances and two elevators for disabled.
