Hitachi rolls out train for Britain’s Intercity Express Program :Hitachi Ltd. unveiled one of the trains being manufactured for the British Department for Transport’s Intercity Express Program (IEP), the company announced Nov. 13.

The new trains are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014 and will be shipped to Britain for test operations in the first half of 2015. The order was received in July 2012.

Hitachi is manufacturing three pre-series trains for the IEP at Kasado Works in Kudamatsu, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

A total of 122 trains were ordered, 12 of which are being manufactured at Kasado Works. The remaining 110 will be built in Britain.

The project is based on a public-private partnership led by the British transport department. Financial support is provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Nippon Export and Investment Insurance and other organizations.

The Class 800 series trains scheduled for delivery will be equipped with a removable diesel engine generator to run both electrified and non-electrified routes.

Passenger rail transport service using the Class 800 trains is scheduled to start from 2017 on the Great Western Main Line and from 2018 on the East Coast Main Line.

Aside from high-speed railways, Hitachi in October 2014 secured preferential negotiating rights from railway operating company Abellio, headquartered in the Netherlands, for delivery of 234 AT-200 cars, or 70 trains, for standard suburban operations, and for a long-term maintenance contract.

The two companies are in the final stages of contract negotiations. Hitachi said it will continue to undertake proactive sales activities targeting railway plans in countries around the world as part of its efforts to accelerate a global rollout of its railway systems.
