Free train tickets canceled due to opportunists :Many free tickets given out during the opening week of the long-awaited İstanbul-Ankara train line have been canceled after opportunists sold them online for profit, Turkish news outlets reported on Thursday.

The high-speed line was opened on Friday, July 25, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was among those aboard the train’s maiden voyage. Turkish State Railways (TCDD) gave out free tickets for use during the first week of operations, which were swept up quickly by eager travelers.

But opportunists were also among those scrambling to get their hands on the free tickets, planning to sell them online. The TCDD authorities had anticipated this, however, according to one employee who spoke with the Anadolu Ajansı (AA) news agency on Thursday.

“Prior to giving away the free tickets, we took some precautions to prevent these types of problems. Those obtaining the free tickets had their first and last names written on the tickets, and ID checks were conducted before ticketholders could board the trains. Those with tickets that did not match their ID cards were not granted permission to board. This situation was announced repeatedly at stations along the high-speed line, but there were probably citizens who did not hear the news. In order to avoid being scammed, we request that all citizens refrain from purchasing black market tickets,” said the employee.
