Bangladesh Railway to add 150 coaches to its fleet :Bangladesh Railway will add 150 Indonesian-made stainless steel coaches to the fleet in the next two years.It entered into agreements with an Indonesian company at Rail Bhaban on Thursday to procure 100 metre-gauge coaches and 50 broad-gauge coaches with ADB funding.

The metre-gauge coaches will cost Tk 3.45 billion and broad-gauge coaches be 2.17 billion.

During the signing, Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque said, procurement of new coaches would solve the crisis of bogies.

Director General of Bangladesh Railway Tofazzal Hossain and President Director of the Indonesia’s PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) R Agus H Purnomo were the signatories to the agreement on the procurement of 100 metre-gauge coaches.

Additional Director General Khalilur Rahman and Purnomo signed the deal for the purchase of 50 broad-gauge coaches.

“Rail has been neglected so far. But now 41 projects are being implemented for the development of railways,” Minister Hoque said.

“Within the next four years, railways will make significant progress. It will be almost like the railways of other countries around the world if not on par with them,” he declared.

Stating that for the first time Bangladesh Railway would include stainless steel coaches in its fleet, Tofazzal Hossain said, “These coaches have longer life and have less maintenance cost.”

The Indonesian company would supply the coaches within the next 24 months, he said.

Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Railways Mansur Ali, Indonesian Ambassador in Dhaka Iwan Wiranata-Atmadja were also present at the event.
