38 trains bought for Marmaray sit idle at Haydarpaşa

38 trains bought for Marmaray sit idle at Haydarpaşa :Thirty-eight trains, bought at a cost of 12 million euros each to transport passengers between Gebze and Halkalı, remain idle at the Haydarpaşa railway station in İstanbul’s Kadıköy district because the infrastructure for the trains to maneuver does not exist at some of the stations along the Marmaray line.

According to a report published in the Bugün daily on Friday, approximately 50 trains, some comprising 10 wagons and the rest five wagons, were imported from South Korea in 2012. Nonetheless, while five-wagon trains were put into service on Oct. 29 of last year, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic, 10-wagon trains remain idle at Haydarpaşa station because they cannot turn around at the current terminal stations on the Marmaray line, Ayrılık Çeşmesi and Kazlıçeşme.

Commenting on the issue, United Transportation Workers Union (BTS) Secretary-General Hasan Bektaş says the trains contain sensitive electronic devices which can be damaged in unfavorable weather conditions. Underlining that the trains have been waiting at Haydarpaşa without being used for three years, Bektaş said the infrastructure in Turkey is not compatible with the trains imported from South Korea. Bektaş also said public money has being wasted for political campaigns.

The Marmaray project includes an upgrade of 63 kilometers of suburban train lines to create a 76.3-kilometer line between Gebze, a town east of İstanbul, and Halkalı, a neighborhood to the west of İstanbul, in addition to the 13.6-kilometer line that is currently in service.

The Marmaray rail tunnel is the world’s first underwater rail link to connect two continents. Sirkeci and Üsküdar are the two stations linking the Asian and European sides via a 1,400-meter tube underneath the Bosporus.
