Works to begin on Victoria rail crossings

Works to begin on Victoria rail crossings  : CONSTRUCTION on three Melbourne rail crossings will soon begin along a 15-kilometre stretch of track where four deaths have occurred since 2000.

Rail underpasses will be built at three crossings in Springvale and Mitcham, in the city’s outer southeast, Premier Denis Napthine announced on Tuesday.

“All three crossing upgrades are set to be completed by the end of 2014,” he said in announcing the winning $350 million in tenders.

He said all three projects would improve safety and road congestion in the area.

“We will get outcomes that will be an absolutely revolutionary change for the Springvale area and the Mitcham area,” Dr Napthine said.

The state government said there had been two deaths at the Mitcham crossings and two fatal crashes at the Springvale crossing in recent years.

Dr Napthine said it was estimated that the boom gates were down at the Springvale station almost half of the morning peak period.
