Washington Metro train derailed on Red Line

An out-of-service Red Line train derailed Saturday evening between the NoMa-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue stations as it was leaving the Brentwood rail yard, Metro officials said Sunday.

The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m., as the train was going at a low speed within the rail yard, Metro officials said. There were no passengers aboard the train and no reports of injuries, they said.

The wheels of the fifth car on the train derailed and the four cars ahead of it were not damaged during the incident. The train stopped just beyond the rail yard on the Red Line and there was some single tracking until the incident cleared.

Customers experienced delays of less than 10 minutes, Metro officials said.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, according to officials.
