Va. Beach could get parts of HRT light-rail study early

Va. Beach could get parts of HRT light-rail study early : The city could have details on ridership, costs and station locations of a possible light-rail route months earlier than expected.

Hampton Roads Transit will release information from its study of a city-owned former Norfolk Southern rail line in increments, starting in September, said President and CEO William Harrell.

Previously, HRT had estimated making all preliminary results available in February 2014.

City officials had expressed concern at that timeline, with Mayor Will Sessoms calling it “discouraging.”

“Mayor Sessoms, we heard you loud and clear,” Harrell said Tuesday while giving an update to the council.

The study began in 2009 and is investigating four options: light rail, bus rapid transit, enhancing existing bus service and doing nothing. It is required for the city to apply for federal transit funding.

In a nonbinding referendum in November, 62 percent of voters expressed support for extending Norfolk’s light-rail line, The Tide, into Virginia Beach.

HRT will next report to the council Feb. 19, when it will present an analysis of potential costs, ridership and traffic impact of a proposed Hilltop connection.
