Trenitalia signed EUR 140m PESA DMU Contract

Trenitalia signed EUR 140m PESA DMU Contract :After winning as massive EUR 1.2bn contract for the delivery of up to 470 diesel-power trains to Deutsche Bahn last year, Polish PESA is celebrating another major victory in Western Europe. It has been reported that the Bydgoszcz-based rail stock producer is to deliver 40 trains to Italy’s Trenitalia.

The EUR 139.6m deal proved lower by some EUR 19m than the customer’s budget for the project and beat a rival bid by an unnamed competitor. PESA is no stranger to the Italian market, where its trains have been in use by state-owned as well as private carriers for more than six years.

Besides Italy and Germany, PESA supplies locomotives for the Ukrainian, Czech and Lithuanian railways as well as trams for municipalities in Poland, Hungary, and Romania. Its business has gained momentum with the 2012 order from Deutsche Bahn, which made headlines in a lot of trade press across the globe. PESA is to build 120 diesel multiple units (DMUs) with 50 to 100 seats each, capable of travelling at maximum speeds of 120km/h for the Germans. Another contracts with DB involves the construction of 350 DMUs with 50 to 220 seats and top speeds of 140km/h.

The company employs a workforce of 3,700, which is not expected to increase as a result of the Deutsche Bahn orders, at factories in Bydgoszcz and Minsk Mazowiecki, just east of Warsaw. Last year PESA turned over PLN 1.853bn and netearned PLN 215m. The company belongs to a number of Polish investors, including its top management.
