Trackwork causes Sydney train delays

Trackwork causes Sydney train delays : A delay in finishing overnight trackwork has caused delays for commuters on Sydney’s CityRail network. The late finish of work at Homebush in the city’s west meant there were delays on the Airport-East Hills, Bankstown, Inner West, North Shore, Northern, South, Western and Blue Mountains lines on Monday morning.

NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian has apologised for the delays, saying scheduled trackwork that was to finish at 2am (AEST) went overtime, meaning it was close to 6.30am before the track was cleared.

Buses have been put on to supplement trains.

“Some passengers may experience an increase in journey time and are advised to allow additional travel time,” CityRail said in a statement.

Opposition Leader John Robertson said it marked the 12th major rail network delay since February.

“It’s time for an explanation from Minister Berejiklian about what is going on on the rail network,” Mr Robertson told reporters.

Commuters deserved a fare-free day and an apology from the government, he said.

“This government has inherited a network where on-time performance targets were being met on every line … now it is at its worst for at least four years.”
