Toshiba to supply new drive systems for Singapore trains

Toshiba Corp. said July 4 it will supply Singapore railway operator SMRT Corp. with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM), the first time the high-efficiency drive system is to be deployed outside of Japan.

The order is for the refurbishment of 66 C151 series trains, the company said.

It will be the first upgrade to the drive systems of the SMRT trains, which entered service in 1987.

The PMSM and peripheral equipment will cut power consumption by 30 percent, reduce operating noise levels, and improve the operating efficiency of the trains, according to Toshiba. The first installation will be on two trains in early 2015, with others following subsequently after 1-2 years of test runs.

Toshiba developed PMSM as a power and noise efficient drive system for commuter trains, and it has been in operation on the world’s busiest subway network, Tokyo Metro, including the Chiyoda Line, the Marunouchi Line and the Ginza Line.
