Taiwan-Spain consortium wins Taiwanese light rail project contract : A Taiwan-Spain consortium has won the bid to construct the Kaohsiung light rail system, the Kaohsiung City Government announced Jan. 4.

The NT$5.68 billion (US$195 million) bid by a joint venture of Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles SA of Spain and local partner Evergreen Construction Corp., secured the contract to build the 8.7-kilometer first stage of the network, linking Kaohsiung’s Asia New Bay Area to the city, Kaohsiung City Secretary-General Wu Hong-mo said.

When completed, the 22.1-kilometer, 36-stop light rail system will encircle the downtown area, connecting such important sites as the Maritime Cultural & Popular Music Center, Kaohsiung World Trade Center, Kaohsiung Software Technology Park and Pier-2 Art Center.

The construction budget for the entire system has been set at NT$16.54 billion, of which NT$6.36 billion will come from central government coffers.

It will be the first light rail project built in Taiwan, and is expected to give a major boost to development in the southern port after the scheduled completion of the first stage in 2014.
