ÖBB wants to order the first 100 regional Desiro ML trains for 550 million euros

The Supervisory Board of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) today authorized the Managing Board to order the first 100 local and regional Desiro ML trains from Siemens from a framework agreement (total volume of up to 200 trains). The contract is to be signed after expiry of the standstill period under public procurement law. Siemens was awarded the contract in April 2010 in one of the largest Europe-wide invitations to tender for electric regional trains. The three-car electric multiple units are to be delivered from the end of 2015. Final production of the trains is to take place at the ÖBB plant in Jedlersdorf (Technical Services). The bogies will come from the Siemens plant in Graz.

30 trains are planned for the rapid transit system (S-Bahn) in the Austrian capital Vienna and Lower Austria, and 70 for regional transit in Upper Austria and Styria. The order volume for these 100 trains totals 550 million euros.

Mobility is a decisive competitive factor for cities. A functional local and regional transit system plays a significant role in the high quality of life in urban centers. Vienna is a city of great mobility where many vehicles from Siemens are already in use, including subway trains, trams and, most recently, an e-bus. The new Desiro ML will help the city continue to ease its street traffic in the future.

Based on a self-contained train design ensuring reliability and flexibility, Desiro ML multiple units can be adapted individually and easily to changing passenger numbers. An enhanced propulsion system, which has once again cut power consumption compared to previous models, makes these trains especially eco-friendly. The train design also specifies the use of environmentally compatible materials, such as for the paintwork and interior furnishings.

ÖBB decided in favor of the basic Desiro ML vehicle, which comprise a three-car standard unit. The S-Bahn trains have 244 seats, the regional trains have 259. The Desiro trains reach a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Convenient low-floor entry ensures easy and barrier-free access without ramps for wheelchairs and families with strollers.
