MRTA board approves new train route

MRTA board approves new train route :The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has approved in principle the building of a new mass transit route, the Brown Line between Kae Rai and Lam Salee, at an estimated cost of 45 billion baht and scheduled for completion in 2021.

The 21.6-km route will be developed as a monorail. It is a new addition to the transportation master plan as this route has no mass transit line to serve the public, MRTA chairman Ratchanee Treepipatkul said on Thursday.

A total of 22 stations are planned along the route, which will start at Kae Rai, travel to Ngam Wong Wan Road, Kaset -Navamin Road and end in Lam Salee area.

MRTA plans to use the existing pillars in the middle of Kaset – Navamin Road earlier built by the Expressway Authority of Thailand. The new route is planned to be a feeder, linking to the Pink Line in Kae Rai, the Purple Line on Rattanathibet Road, the Red Line at Bang Khen prison and Green Line at Kasetsart University.

The plan must be submitted to the Transport Ministry for approval by September. The company expects to complete design work in 2016 and call construction bids in 2017. It will take at least three years to build after that. The Brown Line should be operational in July 2021, if all goes acccording to plan.
