LEITNER ropeways launches another major project in Turkey

LEITNER ropeways launches another major project in Turkey :45 support towers and a height of 1,400 meters, covering a distance of nearly nine kilometers – the longest gondola ropeway in the world will create a link between the Turkish city of Bursa and a recreational area in the adjacent Uludağ Mountain range later this year. The ropeway sets new standards in the industry and will provide locals and tourists with a comfortable ride.

One of the largest ski resorts in Turkey is located in the Uludağ Mountains. Outside of the winter season, the local national park is a popular recreation area that is easily accessible from the city of Bursa in western Turkey. Last week, a special heavy-load helicopter, the HELISWISS, could be seen in the sky above the outskirts of Bursa, the fourth largest city in the country: This helicopter moved components into position for the spectacular project in the partially inaccessible terrain of the national park. This summer, the longest monocable gondola ropeway in the world will be constructed here. The 8.8 km long 8-person gondola ropeway with three sections will replace a 50 year old, 4,500 meter long ropeway. Previously, travelers had to finish the last section of their journey to the hotels and ski area by taxi or bus. Soon they will be able to take the new ropeway straight to their destination from the valley station in Tefferüç in the north-east of the city of Bursa through Kadiyayla and Sarıalan. Travelling time from Bursa to the recreation area will therefore be reduced by 30 minutes. More convenience, less time and reduced car traffic in the Uludağ Mountains are the key benefits of the new ropeway. The stations, which were designed by local architect Yamaç Korfalı, are another impressive feature. Korfalı has worked in London with the star architect Zaha Hadid in the past.

New ropeway offers benefits for both tourism and urban infrastructure

The valley station of the GD8 ropeway is located at an altitude of 395 meters, while the top station is at almost 1,800 meters. A total of 45 support towers will be built to support the ropeway and 174 cabins in the new system. It has a transport capacity of 1,500 people per hour. The client is the city of Bursa and Bursa Teleferik A.Ş is responsible for the construction.

The new ropeway in Bursa is both an urban and tourist facility. For residents, it will increase quality of life by improving transport connections between the city and the recreational area. The project also greatly enhances the tourist appeal of the city of Bursa. The ski area and national park with its rich vegetation are also popular with visitors from nearby Istanbul. The Bosporus Metropolis is only two hours’ drive from Bursa.
