Latest developments on Perpignan – Figueres – Barcelona high speed line

Latest developments on Perpignan – Figueres – Barcelona high speed line : The high speed line between Perpignan and Figueres started operation in 2010, initially only for freight traffic.

Commercial services started in January 2013, which for the moment allow passengers to transfer to TGV trains operated by SNCF between Figueres and Paris. Through high speed services between the Spanish and French networks are expected to start by the end of April (date still to be confirmed), initially on the basis of two round trips a day between Paris and Barcelona, and will progressively be extended to other routes.

The homologation process for trains and crews are currently in progress. The Figueres – Perpignan high speed line has two distinctive features: firstly it is a highly modern infrastructure built under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement with around 50% of investment provided by the French and Spanish governments, and second the line – from a technical point of view – supports mixed traffic, designed for both passenger (high speed) and freight traffic.

Regarding the Figueres – Barcelona section, the line has been in partial operation since 2010 for freight traffic service, while passenger services began in January 2013.

International passenger services will run using high speed trains (AVE, long distance and Avant services, as well as regional trains) from Madrid and Barcelona to Figueres (new station). At this point, passengers must change to TGV trains to reach other destinations in France.
