Innovative Future for Australia’s Rail Industry

Innovative Future for Australia’s Rail Industry :ANUedge was chosen to lead a roadmapping project designed to examine challenges and opportunities for the future of the Australian rail manufacturing sector, and to identify strategies to boost productivity and improve efficiency over the next 30 years.

The Australian rail industry is large and complex. It provides more than 15,000 skilled jobs and supplies two main operational sectors: passenger rail and freight.

As the national transport industry changes, the Australian rail industry must evolve to ensure its future is as grand as its past. Industry leaders recognised the emergence of low-cost competitors and aging infrastructure meant the industry needed a new vision based on collaboration and innovation.

The On Track to 2040 Roadmap was prepared by ANUedge, the Cooperative Research Centre for Rail Innovation, Strategic Connections Group and Cambridge University, and involved almost a year of research and consultation with over 100 rail industry organisations. It highlights a range of industrial, social and economic challenges such as increasing population pressures and diverse industry standards, future high-speed rail demand and need for bulk resource transportation due to the expanding mining sector. These challenges represent opportunities for Australian rail suppliers to deliver solutions to the global rail industry.

On Track to 2040 also outlines 18 priority areas for future technology development across the scope of the industry including reducing the transport industry’s carbon footprint and improving productivity through improved design and automation.

“This project is symbolic of the industry’s determination to achieve a consensus on a vision – it outlines directions for future opportunities and pathways. Importantly it sets out necessary short-term decisions that will lay the foundations for long-term sustainability.” – Bruce Griffiths, Rail Supplier Advocate, Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.
