Hobart light rail project will grind to a halt

Supporters of a Hobart light rail proposal say the State Government has dropped the ball on the project and time is running out to secure federal funding.

In February the Sustainable Transport Minister, Nick McKim said he anticipated work on a Hobart light rail business case would be completed by mid-April, and a submission for federal funding would be made in May.

His light rail task force was expected to meet in March.

The Rail Action Group’s President, Ben Johnston says so far there has been no movement.

“To my knowledge the taskforce hasn’t been established or met,” he said.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie says time is running out.

“The federal budget is four weeks away. A submission should have been made well before this,” Mr Wilkie said.

“Given the Tasmanian Government’s track record in matters like this, there’s now a big question mark over whether they will get anything into Canberra any time soon.”

Mr McKim says the light rail is on track and he expects to receive the revised business case in a fortnight.

He says he is also waiting on responses from individuals about whether they will take part in the light rail taskforce.
