History uncovered during Marmaray tunnel construction :Historical artifacts from neolithic, hellenistic, ancient Roman and Byzantine-Ottoman times were placed under protection during the Marmaray’s construction.

Archeological evidence of 13 meter deep historical ruins of a port from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods was discovered at the newly opened Marmaray’s Yenikapi subway station.

Istanbul Culture Museum Director Zeynep Sezin Kiziltan said on Wednesday they had also uncovered a neolithic strata at the Yenikapi subway station during the Marmaray construction which dates the history of the city to around 8,000 years ago.

“These historical ruins are very valuable and important information for the archive of the city. These artifacts called the attention of the science world here,” said Kiziltan.

Kiziltan noted that the Marmaray’s 3 subway stations, Uskudar, Sirkeci and Yenikapi, are located on archeological sites, and that they had thus started digs in the areas under the directorship of the Istanbul Culture Museum.

With permission from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, they have undertaken archeological excavations at Uskudar, four different points in Sirkeci, in Yenikapi and central Istanbul districts since 2004.

Noting that excavations in Uskudar and Sirkeci had concluded in 2008 and 2012 respectively, she added, “The excavation at Yenikapi subway station is still ongoing because this is the largest of the digs.”

The ruins of Theodosius Port, historic vessels, and a neolithic strata were discovered under the Yenikapi subway station.

Architectural ruins belonging to the archaic classical, hellenistic, and ancient Roman periods were uncovered around Sirkeci and Uskudar.

The architectural and archeological artifacts will be exhibited at the Marmaray Museum and Arkeo Museum.
