Gravesend railway station in £19m upgrade

A new platform will be built at Gravesend railway station as part of a £19m upgrade.

Network Rail has appointed engineering firm C Spencer to carry out the project, which is designed to enable longer 12-car trains to stop at the station.

There will also be a new footbridge, lifts and step-free access to platforms.

Funding is being provided by Network Rail and the government’s Access for All programme.

Fiona Taylor, route managing director for Kent at Network Rail, said: “Gravesend station will be vastly improved and the reconstructed platforms will mean longer trains can be accommodated, providing more seats for passengers.”

Construction will get underway in May 2013 and it is expected that the changes will be completed by May 2014.

However, the station will be closed for 15 days over the festive period, from 22 December 2013 to 6 January 2014, to allow major building work to take place.
