GO Transit to expand service on Lakeshore line this summer

GO Transit to expand service on Lakeshore line this summer : Starting this summer, GO trains on the Lakeshore line will be rolling at least every 30 minutes.

The half-hour service — dubbed “the largest single expansion of service in GO Transit’s history — starts on June 29 and will be in effect every day between Oshawa and Aldershot.

“You can all reach into your pockets now and tear up your schedule for GO Transit,” Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray told reporters at Union Station on Friday.

The change will add 263 new train trips each week on the Lakeshore Line — GO’s busiest rail corridor.

“What it really means for Ontarians is that you can just ‘go,’” Murray said.

“You don’t have to think. You just go. You go to the station, and in less than 30 minutes, you will catch a train. This is a remarkable improvement in the quality of life.”

Trains will be even more frequent during rush hour.

The move will cost the province an extra $7.7 million a year, but Murray hopes it will get more people out of their cars.

“The more things that you can do [using GO] — doctor’s appointments, visits, shopping, hockey games, visiting relatives, whatever it is that you choose to do — the less need you have for a car.”

More than 100,000 people ride on the Lakeshore line every weekday.
