Felixstowe port opens new £40m rail terminal

Felixstowe port opens new £40m rail terminal : A new £40m rail terminal has opened at the Port of Felixstowe, which operators said would double the number of containers moved by train.

Owner Hutchison Ports said currently 750,000 containers left by rail – 27% of the port’s total.

The new nine-track terminal, part of a £300m expansion, was opened later by the Duke of York, Prince Andrew.

Clemence Cheng, chief executive officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd, said the project would take traffic off roads.

“We already have 11 tracks, so it will give us 20 tracks in all which will make us bigger than King’s Cross station, which only has 12 platforms,” he said.

“We’re here to invest for the long-term to make the port the port of Britain for both importers and exporters.”
