Construction of US$7.5bn Tinaco-Anaco rail stretch to generate 5,000 jobs :

Construction of the 468km Tinaco-Anaco stretch of Venezuela’s northern rail network will generate over 5,000 direct jobs, state news agency AVN reported.

The railway will cross through the Llanos grasslands, connecting the northern states of Cojedes, Guárico, Aragua and Anzoátegui, travelling at a maximum speed of 220km/h.

Work is currently 30% complete, according to the report.

Venezuela and China signed a US$7.5bn contract to start construction on the rail stretch in 2009. Work is being carried out by China Railway Engineer Corporation, with machinery provided by China’s XCMG.

The railway is expected to transport 6mn passengers and 10Mt of cargo annually. First-stage work on the line is expected to wrap up by end-2012.
