Brazil’s Alagoas state to call tender for light rail project :Brazil’s Alagoas state government will issue a call for bids at the beginning of 2014 for a light rail system (VLT) project to connect Maceió airport with the center of Maceió city, the state capital.

The project – which includes the deployment of 24km of track, as well as 17 stations, and electric trains – has a projected cost of nearly 1.5bn reais (US$643mn), said the state’s infrastructure secretary Marco Fireman, according to a release by national rail equipment manufacturers association Abifer.

Of that total, the federal government is set to provide 900mn reais, with the rest coming from the state government and the winning concessionaire.

The project, which will be awarded under the country’s differentiated contract system (RDC), also includes the construction of a new road approaching the airport to replace the current one.

The works are expected to be finished 24 months after completion of the tender process.
