Bechtel eyes US$18bn Rio-São Paulo bullet train project : US engineering group Bechtel is interested in competing for works under Brazil’s 35.6bn-real (US$17.8bn) Rio-São Paulo-Campinas bullet train project, managing director for the company’s rail sector, Amjad Bangash, told BNamericas.

“Our experience in the high speed rail market includes projects in South Korea and the UK. Besides not letting up on quality, one of the fundamental mottos we live by is getting the job done on time and within budget,” Bangash said.

From 1991-2002, the company provided project management for a US$16bn initiative to implement a 300km/h train running through six stations in South Korea. Nearly half of the 412km route involved tunnels, 27% viaducts, and 27% of the line was at a grade.

Launched in 2007, Bechtel also led a consortium responsible for the design, project management, and construction management of a 109km railway in the UK now deemed High Speed 1. It also travels at 300km/h.

The 511km high speed train route – also known as the EF-222 line – will run through the cities of Campinas, Guarulhos, São Paulo and São José dos Campos in São Paulo state, and Volta Redonda and Barra Mansa in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the tender schedule, parties interested in the project must deliver proposals by August 13. Bids will be opened on São Paulo’s Bovespa stock exchange on September 19.

Other companies seen to be eyeing the project include Korea’s Hyundai and Samsung, France’s Alstom, Germany’s Siemens, Spain’s CAF, Canada’s Bombardier, and Japan’s Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Toshiba.

The government body in charge of the initiative is logistics and planning group, EPL.
