Athens Tramway Extension (Edilon Sedra)

Athens Tramway Extension : edilon)(sedra BV is pleased to announce that it has won a contract concerning their Urban Slab Track System (USTS) with Embedded Rail Systems (ERS) for the extension of the Athens Tramway to the port of Piraeus.

The 5.5 km single-track line will run in a one-way loop linking the current south terminus at Neo Faliro, where interchange to Metro Line 1 is provided, with Akti Posidonos on the Port, along the busy downtown area of the country’s second largest city. The alignment runs close to the building line of a densely populated urban environment that includes several listed buildings which constitute city landmarks.

The strict requirements for noise and vibration control set by the supervising authority Attiko Metro SA, are perfectly met by the high performance of the edilon)(sedra Embedded Rail Systems (ERS) that provides continuous elastic support of the rails, drastically reduces ground-borne noise and offers a virtually maintenance-free track structure. Over half of the track length will be installed upon edilon)(sedra Trackelast Slab Track Mats (STM) forming a resilient substructure basis.

With the introduction of edilon)(sedra USTS prefabricated slabs throughout the length of the project, including some 19 switches and crossings, is expected to save construction time and minimize nuisance to the city’s vivid everyday life and crowded traffic. In addition, USTS allows for relatively shallow excavation depth thus minimizing the risk of intervening with the archeological wealth that lies underground.

This turnkey project has been awarded to the Greek Themeli SA as general contractor with a value of €61.5M. edilon)(sedra BV will contribute with the general design of the system, supply of materials and provision of technical support, training and quality control assistance.

Construction will begin in the summer of 2013 and the project is expected to be commissioned early 2015.
