Athens metro : four new stations of Line 2 open on Friday, Jul 26/2013 :Line 2 of Athens metro was extended with four new stations on Friday noon, July 26th 2013. Line 2 does not stop anymore to Agios Dimitrios but goes further to Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argiroupoli and Elliniko, parallel to Vouliagmenis avenue in south-east Athens.

It is expected that an extra 80,000 people will use the metro system.

This will mean 50,000 fewer trips by car in Athens each day, according to transport experts. Passengers will be able to travel from Elliniko in southeastern Athens to Syntagma in the city center in 14 minutes.

Too bad that there are no parking slots round the new metro stations, as originally planned.

In the case of Elliniko and Ilioupolis stations the provision for the parking area was cancelled because that areas belong to the plot of old Athens airport (Elliniko) that is offer for sale by the state. As for the other two stattions, there is no parking due to disagreement over the cost (hear din Skai TV this morning).

The new metro stations cause changes in the bus schedules and routes. More details read here (in Greek)

According to initial plans, the stations will had to be delivered already in 2009. The construction was completed in 2010 due to construction difficulties. Another cause of delay was the SIEMENS bribes scandal as the company was entrusted with the supply of traffic signs in the metro lines 2 and 3.
