ANTT preparing US$1.65bn Rio de Janerio-Vila Velha railway : Brazil’s national ground transport agency ANTT has opened up a consultancy period to prepare a concession for a rail project between the cities of Vila Velha in Espírito Santo state and Rio de Janeiro, valued at 3.52bn reais (US$1.65bn).

The 551km railway will involve 9.5km of tunnels, bridges and viaducts. Construction should take five years, according to a federal government document.

Interested parties may submit contributions regarding preliminary studies for the project to ANTT’s railway transport infrastructure and services department. Contributions will be accepted until June 28, a government release said.

The route will pass through 27 municipalities in the southeast of the country, 15 in the state of Rio de Janeiro and 12 in the state of Espírito Santo. The project falls under the federal government’s logistics investment program PIL launched last August.

Besides railways, ANTT is the regulatory authority for Brazil’s highway infrastructure, covering both passenger and cargo transport.
