Alstom inks deal on Baghdad Elevated Train project

Alstom has finally signed a contract for the engineering phase of the Baghdad Elevated Train project in Iraq.

In January 2011, Alstom signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the local government of Baghdad with the objective of signing a deal for the BET.

In May 2011, an agreement about the BET was signed in the context of the negotiation process.

Now, after what Alstom describes as “mutual discussions”, it has finally signed a contract for the engineering phase of the BET project.

A $40m study phase will last around 10 months and includes civil works and electromechanical studies, ground analysis, infrastructures, topography, with the aim of the firm moving to a five-year construction period.

BET involves building a line that runs for 25km on a viaduct, which is aimed to reduce congestion in the city. It will link the areas of Al Mustansiriya and Alawi al Hilla in central Baghdad.
