$1.4bn Doha Metro stations contract awarded

A consortium of companies from Spain, South Korea and Qatar have won a contract worth $1.4bn to build two of the Doha Metro most iconic stations.

Spain’s OHL Group said in a statement that it, in partnership with Samsung C & T and Local Qatar Building Company, had secured the work on the rail project.

It said the contract involves the design and construction of stations at Msheireb and Education City.

The Doha Metro is a key part of Qatar’s ambitious infrastructure project as it aims to be ready to host the 2022 World Cup tournament.

Msheireb Station will be the most important station to be located in the heart of the city, called Msheireb Downtown Doha, which is currently being reshaped in an ambitious regeneration project.

Education City Station will connect with a long-distance rail network, the statement said.

The two stations will be “modern” buildings and serve as transfer points to different metro lines or other transportation modes, such as long-distance rail, the statement added.

The contract is valued at roughly QR5.1bn ($1.4bn), $500m of which corresponds to civil engineering and the rest to electromechanical and architectural work.

This contract strengthens the presence of OHL Construction in Qatar, where it currently runs the Medical and Research Centre of Sidra.

The company added that the GCC region are “of strategic importance” and is also working on the Jamal Abdul Nasser viaduct in Kuwait and a high-speed railway between Makkah and Madinah.
