Vienna: the old “Bims” get greener

The tram is a particularly climatefriendly form of transport. But older trams (which the Viennese fondly call
“Bims”) still have room for improvement.

To make the beloved old “Bims” more environmentally friendly, transport operator Wiener Linien in conjunction with Bombardier has now fitted 120 old tram sets with new electronics.

By installing so-called “chopper” switching devices, the old trams, like the new low-floor vehicles, are able to feed 25 to 30 per cent of the electrical energy generated in braking back into the overhead power grid.
