Vectron in successful operation in Poland

At InnoTrans 2010, the four Vectron locomotives from Siemens were among the real highlights. It was the
fi rst time that a manufacturer had unveiled a complete loco family at one time. Now, one and a half years later, the fi rst locomotives are proving themselves in trials with different customers in Poland.

In November 2011, the Polish regulatory authority Urzad Transportu Kolejowego (UTK) granted Siemens provisional
approval for the pure DC version of the Vectron locomotive. Two locomotive  had already been on test runs in Poland since June 2011, including on the test track near Zmigród. Both locos are equipped with the Polishtrain control system SHP.

To obtain fi – nal approval, the Vectron locomotives now have to demonstrate their reliability in goods and passenger service. To begin with, the Vectron locos were put to use in goods haulage, with one being operated by DB Schenker Rail
Polska und the other by ITL Polska. ITL ran the Vectron loco for around two months, and then it was transferred
to PKP IC. It has since been hauling inter-city trains at up to 160 kilometres per hour from Warsaw to Katowice.

DB Schenker Rail Polska is continuing to operate the other Vectron in freight haulage, including pulling heavy coal trains.
