Union ‘disappointed’ about Moreton Bay rail link decision

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) says it hopes the State Government will reconsider blocking Queensland Rail (QR) from the tender process of the Moreton Bay rail link.

The RTBU has appealed for Federal Government intervention after QR was blocked from a tender process for track-laying work on the new Moreton Bay rail link.

The Commonwealth has contributed about $800 million for the $1.1 billion project between Petrie and Kippa-Ring to the north of Brisbane.

A Transport Department spokesman says the State Government believes QR should focus on the existing network and not branch out to lay new tracks.

RTBU spokesman Owen Doogan says Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese needs to step in.

“[Mr] Albanese is the Minister who’s providing the vast majority of the money and we have advised him of what’s occurred,” he said.

“But the decision we understand is that of the Transport Minister in Queensland [Scott Emerson] and we’d seek the Transport Minister in Queensland to change his decision.”

Mr Doogan says the matter should be reviewed.

“We are really disappointed with what they’ve done,” he said.

“We certainly believe that the Minister for Transport should be prepared to reconsider and allow the people who have been doing it for generations and all over the world to do the work that comes natural to them.”
