Ukraine: suburban passenger transport to suffer losses

Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsia estimates that suburban passenger transport losses on light rail networks will amount this year to UAH 3.4 Billion (EUR 337 Million).

This situation is the result of the fact that the government covers only part of the transport costs for the passengers who are entitled to compensations. In 2011, the sums received from the government to cover these compensations amounted to just 33.2% of the costs.

Passengers benefiting from compensations represent 70% of the total number of passengers travelling on suburban railways.
