Thales welcomes the opening of İstanbul’s Kadıköy- Kartal Metro

Thales has welcomed the opening of İstanbul’s newest metro line operating with the company’s reliable signalling SelTrac® CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) and Integrated Communication and Control systems (ICS). In 2009, Thales was awarded the contract by the Avrasya Metro Grubu to supply the line with an integrated solution.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the inauguration ceremony to open the 21.7km, 16 stations Kadıköy-Kartal metro line at a ceremony at Kadıköy Square. The line is the first metro running on the Asian side of the city, supporting İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s plans to improve public transport in the city, which includes the expansion of light rail and metro networks to reliably service 12.5 million potential passengers. The line will carry 700,000 passengers daily. The route has
connections with Turkish State Railway’s Marmaray system at Ayrılıkçeşme and the İstanbul Metrobus system at Ünalan.

Mayor of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Kadir Topbaş announced, “I am proud of opening the Kadıköy-Kartal metro line and being involved in such a project since the beginning”.

“Our stable and reliable technology contributed to this successful opening,” said Ali Serdar Baran, Country Director for Thales in Turkey. “Thales is also an important supplier of Turkey’s main lines rail network with its ETCS high-speed line solutions and
we look forward to more transportation projects in Turkey.”

This is the second metro contract for Thales in Turkey after Ankara where Thales equipped the city’s heavy metro line with the SelTrac CBTC solution. This is also Thales’s first integrated security and communications contract in this country. The solution includes an Operation Control Centre (OCC) that manages the security systems.

Thales’ CBTC system has been proven on 53 projects around the world to date and operates on over 1,200 km of track in major urban centers around the world, carrying an estimated 3 billion passengers annually.
