Thales to provide communications systems to Hyderabad Metro Rail in India

Engineering and construction company Larsen & Toubro signed an agreement with Thales, India for providing Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) and Integrated Communications and Supervision (ICS) systems for Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project. The CBTC advanced signalling and ICS systems will be implemented for the HMR lines 1, 2 and 3, covering 72 km of rail and comprising 66 stations.

“We are delighted to have secured the first CBTC project in India, as this is a landmark contract being the first of its kind in India,” Thales India vice president, Eric Lenseigne, stated in a press release on Tuesday.

Thales Group is a Euro 13 billion French multinational company that designs and builds electrical systems and provides services for the aerospace, defence, transportation and security markets.

Thales will design, build, deliver and manage the installation of the SelTrac communications-based train control solution. Its success, according to the company, has already been proven globally as more than 30 of the world’s largest cities metro systems use Thales SelTrac CBTC, transporting 3 billion passengers each year.

The integrated communications and supervision systems supplied will build on the success of previous supervision projects in India in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Jaipur. Thales will deliver its comprehensive ICS package, composed by data transmission, public address, passenger information display, fault reporting facilities, office automation and information technology, CCTV, access control and intrusion detection, master clock, telephony, voice recording and radio tetra systems.

The L&T HMR, a public-private partnership (PPP) project, is expected to trigger robust economic activity in and around the city and generate substantial employment. The greenfield project will be deployed in six stages and will cover three key corridors: Miyapur to LB Nagar; Jubilee Bus Stand to Falaknuma; and Nagole to Shilparaman. Under the integrated coordination of a central control operations facility, trains will operate automatically, with an attendant on board.

L&T incorporated a special purpose vehicle, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited to implement the project on a design, built, finance, operate and transfer basis.
