Spain and Portugal to support freight transport cross-border connections

Spain and Portugal governments have agreed to “support as fast as possible” European gauge railway connections for freight transport on the route Sines-Lisabona-Caya (Badajoz)-Madrid-Irún and Aveiro-Salamanca-Irún. The authorities have said these links are “strategic” for improving exports to Europe and for “increasing the competitiveness” of the companies in the two countries.

The declaration of intent has not been accompanied by the set up of clear routes or a deadline for project development.

The improvement of the conventional link from Oporto to Vigo has also been set by upgrading the line and reducing the number of stops.
