RZD: terminal owners in Ust-Luga port want to invest in railway development

Russian Railways urged owners of terminals in the Ust-Luga port to invest into railway infrastructure development, said Vladimir Yakunin, President of RZD.

The railway capacity on the direction to Ust-Luga has reached its maximum – not more than 37 million tonnes can be transported per annum there. Stevedores plan to enhance their cargo turnover to 70 million tonnes per annum by 2015, and to 120 million tonnes per annum – by 2020.

RZD plans to electrify the Gatchina-Luzhskaya railway section and build the Luzhskaya-Sortirovochnaya railway station, therefore, the line’s capacity will grow to 57 million tonnes. The President of Russian Railways hopes that USD 779 Million will be allocated from the budget to carry these works out.

To make the capacity of the railway line meet the stevedores’ needs, the reconstruction of the Mga – Gatchina – Veimarn – Ivangorod section is to be completed. RZD has already invested USD 1.4 Billion into this project – additional tracks have been built and construction of the Ust-Luga railway stations has started. Another USD 2.4 Billion is needed to complete the reconstruction.

In the opinion of Mr Yakunin, owners of port terminals should compensate for the lack of money on the Luzhskaya-Generalnaya and Luzhskaya-Vostochnaya railway stations. The required sum USD 194 Million.
