RISSB National Derailment Investigations and Analysis Workshop – Canberra

The third instalment for 2012 of the highly successful RISSB National Derailment Investigations and Analysis Workshop, will be held the week before AusRAIL 2012, also being hosted in Canberra this year.

Following on from the inaugural RISSB National Derailment Investigations Workshop last February, the 2013 event takes the next-step from investigation analysis to derailment prevention.

According to the ATSB, there were 157 running line derailments in Australian from Jan-Dec 2011 (Source: http://www.atsb.gov.au/media/3602413/rr2012001.pdf). Although there’s been an improvement over the last decade, the real significance of derailments is the failure of the system. Derailments provide a great learning opportunity to improve safety systems by ensuring that similar occurrences are eliminated or the likelihood of recurrence is reduced.

The workshop will provide the rail industry with a forum to discuss the complex issues surrounding regulation, investigations, human factors, infrastructure and operations in relation to derailments. Featuring recent case studies to highlight the safety lessons of recent derailments and the strategies that organisations have implemented, to reduce derailments and minimise risk.
