Potential Builder Identified for Big Bilevel Order

The California Department of Transportation intends to award a contract to build 130 bilevel passenger cars to Sumitomo Corp. of America. The joint order includes 42 cars for California and 88 for the Midwest Coalition of Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri. Before the contract can be awarded, Caltrans and the Illinois Department of Transportation will conduct a “Buy America” audit to ensure that the cars are all assembled in the United States and that all major components are built here.

To be assembled at the Nippon Sharyo plant in Rochelle, Ill., the first cars should arrive in late 2015, with the final deliveries in early 2018.

California will assign its cars to the Capitol Corridor between Sacramento, Oakland, and San Jose; the San Joaquin Corridor between the San Francisco Bay area, Sacramento, and Bakersfield; and the Pacific Surfliner route between San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The Midwest Coalition cars will be used on the Blue Water (Chicago-Port Huron), Wolverine (Chicago-Detroit-Pontiac), and Pere Marquette (Chicago-Grand Rapids services in Michigan. They’ll also run on the Illini/Saluki (Chicago-Carbondale), the Lincoln Service corridor (Chicago-St. Louis), the Missouri River Runner (St. Louis-Kansas City), and the Illinois Zephyr/Carl Sandburg (Chicago-Quincy). The’ll also be assigned to future services out of Chicago to Dubuque, Iowa, and the Quad Cities.
