Phoenix breaks ground on light rail extension

GROUNDBREAKING ceremony will be held in Phoenix today to mark the start of construction on Phoenix Valley Metro’s 5km Central Mesa extension.

The $US 200m project is the first expansion of the city’s light rail network since the opening of the initial 32km phase from Montebello/19th Avenue to Sycamore/Main in west Mesa in 2008.
In March Valley Metro selected Valley Transit Constructors, a joint venture of Kiewit, Mass Electric, and Parsons, to design and build the four-station extension, which is due to open in 2015.
