Only 760 millimetre platforms in future

The whole of the commuter rail network in the VRR (Verkehrsverbund Rhein- Ruhr) transport area is to be converted
to platforms with a height of 760 millimetres.

Previously, 960 millimetres was the benchmark – and accordingly, the rolling stock currently used is optimised for that height of platform. The tender for services on the S 5 and S 8 lines rekindled the debate, because the mixed traffic situation means that, of the 170 S-Bahn stations in the VRR area, 30 cannot be converted to 960 millimetres even over the longer term.

As of the end of 2014, new rolling stock with a fl oor height of 800 millimetres will enter service on lines S 5/S 8. The VRR aims to put all the commuter lines out to tender again by the end of 2019. The new rolling stock required will then also have a fl oor height of 800 millimetres.

The VRR, DB Station&Service and DB Netz are currently studying what conversion work needs to be carried out at individual stations.
